BOOK 1 of the JACK FUNNYBONE/FATE trilogy
BRIEF SYNOPSIS
JACK FUNNYBONE is suffering from a debilitating illness. Forced to leave work and forsaken by his girlfriend he has a dream: he wants to be a comedian or copywriter – but, is exasperated by his condition and lacks self-confidence.
Jack, lonesome and mourning the recent loss of his parents, invites his uncle (BOB – a retired Marketing Manager and one-time comic) and aunt (MAUREEN – ex-public relations and a poet with a secret) to the family beach-house for a Christmas Day dinner where they learn of his hopes and aspirations. Jack showcases his comedic ability and copywriting talent. Maureen and Bob are impressed. Jack is instilled with confidence.
Jack, in one appointment after another, consults his general practitioner, DR HEALD, and chiropractic kinesiologist, DR MCCRACKEN, in a desperate search for a cure.
Maureen and Bob suggest he talk to their copywriter daughter, Sophie, who has overcome a serious illness through an esoteric form of meditation. Jack is sceptical. They also put forward a proposition involving Sophie that could see him gain work as a copywriter. In addition, they advance a proposal concerning a beautiful comedienne that could lead to the fulfilment of his comedic ambitions and finding love again. Jack, curious, displays a tentative interest in their plan.
Jack deduces happenstance may have provided him with a lucky break. Perceiving a semblance of hope and with it new-found self-belief, he agrees to look at all possibilities.
In a cruel twist of fate and tragic ending, Jack, once again beset by misfortune and with his plans in jeopardy, experiences a revelation that may lead to the realisation of his dreams.

REVIEWS
‘There are poetic sentences and glimpses of the writer’s vision. There are also lyrical moments where the writer moves the narrative with a deft hand and the reader is touched by a subtle grace … there is real power. The humour of the piece is nearly a character in itself.’
